Measure-X is a tool for carrying out 5G measurements with multiple devices and traffic profiles. Besides collecting the data and extracting the main network metrics, the Age of Information (AoI) and energy consumption are also measured. Estimating the energy consumption due to communication is particularly relevant as in several 5G usage scenarios, the monitoring infrastructure also includes mobile nodes that are battery-powered, and cellular communication can be one of the main energy drains. AoI is an end-to-end metric particularly useful whenever the availability of fresh information is of paramount importance. Measure-X relies on nodes (one or more) that are able to generate traffic according to models that represent the different communication patterns and styles found in the 5G usage scenarios.

In its current implementation, Measure-X probes are implemented as Raspberry PI5 devices, equipped with an HAT hosting the 5G module. Probes are controlled by a central element responsible for their coordination.

  • Paper accepted at the REFRESH 2025 workshop

Our paper describing Measure-X has been accepted at the 3rd International Workshop on Real-life modeling in 5G/6G networks and beyond (REFRESH 2025), in the context of the INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING IN SMART SYSTEMS AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS.

  • Tests at Fraunhofer IPT

On April 1-2. we carried out an experimental measurement campaign at Fraunhofer IPT. During the campaign, we not only validated Measure-X functionalities but also collected useful results. In particular, through some dedicated experiments, we found the best message rate for obtaining the lowest possible value of the Age of Information (AoI) on an unloaded network…

  • Let’s start!

On 1/10/2024, we started our activities related to Measure-X, in the context of the Target-X project. Measure-X is a tool for carrying out 5G measurements with multiple devices and traffic profiles. Measure-X allows for the network to be characterized not only according to classical metrics, such as round trip time, jitter, throughput, and packet loss,…
